Recipient of the 2012 It's About Time Sponsorship is first woman from Dominican Republic to attend the WAI Conference...also Announcing 2013 Sponsorship Application!
Congratulations to Maria Batlle, the 2012 recipient of the It’s About Time Sponsorship! The Abingdon Co. took Maria to the 23rd Annual Women In Aviation International Conference, March 8-10 in Dallas, Texas. We’re taking care of room and board and registration while she will be able to attend seminars, meet other women, and find out about all aspects of the aviation. After receiving piles of applications over the past half a year for the 2012 It's About Time Scholarship, The Abingdon Co. has chosen it's recipient to join the company at the 2012 Annual International Women in Aviation Conference as their guest. This year's winner is Maria Batlle from the Dominican Republic.
The 2012 Annual International WAI Conference, held in Dallas this year, is the largest conference in the country for women in the aviation industry. It is expected to have over 3000 attendees from all over the world and will feature education seminars, job seeking platforms, scholarships, and key note speakers. It is one of the largest venues for women to network from aviation fields such as airlines, air traffic control, maintenance, military, and aviation business and administration. The Abingdon Co. has been in attendance since 2008 and is a big supporter of the event and bringing more women into the aviation industry.
The 2012 It's About Time Scholarship is overseen by The Abingdon Co. each year and awards a full registration to the conference, round trip airfare, and room and board during the conference. Applicants are not required to be pilots or in the aviation industry. The goal is to invite someone to see all of the different avenues of aviation from engineering to aerobatics to maintenance and airlines. The criteria is simple: tell or show why you deserve to go. The applicant chooses the format for their application. The one with the most passion goes. The Abingdon Co. CEO, Abingdon Welch, stressed during the application process to be as creative as necessary. "I was never a good essay writer and dreaded writing essays for scholarships, I always felt I would have had a better chance if I could make a video, write a song, or create something that showed why I was worthy of the scholarship. I wanted to make that possible for people applying for this scholarship."
Maria Batlle had not only written an essay, but she also designed a sticker that The Abingdon Co. uses in their marketing and will be passing out for free at their booth at the conference. She also translated The Abingdon Co. website, www.TheAbingdonCo.com into Spanish. She is currently studying for her private pilot's certificate in the Dominican Republic and is a graphic designer and video jockey for Mastercard.
