Oregon Aero Brings Seat Comfort to Van’s Original RV-1 U.S. Tour Pilots
SCAPPOOSE, Ore. — When Dick Van Grunsven pilots his restored original RV-1 to arrive at EAA AirVenture as part of “A Tribute to Van’s Aircraft Day” on Monday, July 23, he’ll be flying the final leg of a U.S. tour by the airplane. The tour pilots had the advantage of sitting on an Oregon Aero® seat cushion that offered them a level of comfort in the cramped cockpit not available when the plane was designed more than 40 years ago.
“If it weren’t for Oregon Aero, the cross-country legs on our tour would have been much, much shorter,” said Ernie Butcher of Friends of the RV-1, the organization which restored the airplane. “Working with Oregon Aero, we wanted to create a seat cushion that would be comfortable for our pilots and provide more space in the cockpit. Oregon Aero succeeded in design and quality craftsmanship and took it to a whole new level.”
Known for precision-engineered seating systems that provide maximum comfort and improved safety, Oregon Aero custom designed its VK SmartCushion™ system for the restored RV-1 to accommodate pilots of various heights. The company also created mid-1960’s period-specific upholstery.
“We were happy to make flying more comfortable for the pilots flying the RV-1 on its U.S. tour and extremely pleased to participate in this historic restoration project,” said Tony Erickson, Chief Operating Officer for Oregon Aero. “Dick Van Grunsven and Van’s Aircraft have made unparalleled contributions to the homebuilt aircraft industry.”
The RV-1’s arrival at Oshkosh will feature a parade of all RV models produced by Van’s Aircraft over the years and a tribute flight from the RV formation group Falcon Flight. At Phillips 66 Plaza, EAA President/CEO Rod Hightower will accept the keys to the RV-1 from Friends of the RV-1, which is donating the airplane to EAA.
