Sling Receives S-LSA Airworthiness, make first visit to Oshkosh since Around the World Flight in 2009
The Sling is here! Booth #305
The Airplane Factory Sling has just received its S-LSA Airworthiness in the United States as of April of this year. The Airplane is an all-metal low wing nose wheel design. It features a Sliding Canopy, MGL Avionics Glass Panel and fully adjustable Leather seats.
The airplane is making its debut here at Oshkosh, during the greatest aviation show on Earth. However, its not their first appearance at the show.
In 2009, The Airplane Factory founders made a stop here on their way Around the World. Mike Blyth, the designer of the airplane, and James Pitman, co-founder, spent 2 years designing the 2 seat Light Sport Aircraft known as the Sling. After which they spent another 6 months tweaking the handling characteristics of the airplane in order to get the feel just right before departing on their journey.
Since completing that expedition, they have gone into production with their 2 seat model, producing just over 65 as of today's date, with orders for over 100.
The Airplane Factory itself, located in Johannesburg, South Africa, has 88 full time employees, including 2 aeronautical engineers, 3 draftsmen and one certification engineer. The company has recently expanded their production facilities increasing capacity to about 5 planes per month. Mike has stated, they are on their way to producing about 3 Slings per week.
The Sling at the show (N511NG) is located at the US Distributor headquarters in Torrance, California. If you'd like to go see the Sling, it is located in Booth #305 just outside Hangar B.
Have a great time at AirVenture 2012!
